Week 1: Responding to the Articles and Podcast

The two articles and the podcast all had the topic of this course which is pop culture. In the first article, the author talks about how "the whole country is going through some sort of spiritual and emotional crisis" Reading that for some reason it really stood out to me and I had to write it down, what the author mentioned is extremely relatable and I felt that basically sums up life around the world recently. Everything has been so out of sorts and everyone has been going through basically an emotional crisis because of everything we have all been experiencing.

The author also mentioned five types of lies that are well known throughout the American culture. One of those being that you will not fulfill success unless you go to college, this is something that is said way too often around the time you find yourself graduating high school, and frankly, it makes some kids feel like they need to go to college if they want to do anything remotely successful in their life even if college simply is not for them, school is not for everyone and that is completely ok. I personally frown upon this lie so much, this saying irritates me because the amount of people who have a great, happy and successful life and never stepped foot in college is probably just about even with those who did go to college. Success is something you strive for and work hard for to achieve and there are many ways to reach that goal, many more than just going to college.

In the second article, the author addresses some definitions of pop culture, I think a lot of people do follow what is popular just because it is what's cool in the moment. The way pop culture has been delivered since the early 2000s has drastically changed. Being born in 2000 I feel that growing up experiencing all the changes in my childhood to now in my early adulthood is something pretty cool to sit back and notice how everything went from basically print and wanting to get a magazine whenever my mom took me somewhere because they were cool and had celebrity gossip in them along with posters pretty much every little girl ripped out and hung on her bedroom wall back in 2009. Now looking at how magazines have lost the hype because now the media is focused on social platforms and basically all online. Pop culture today really embraces social media and not always for the good.

The podcast I found really useful and I was able to take some good notes for the future while listening. I can agree that one thing they don't prepare you for in highschool is how to study and take good notes in college. I liked how they mentioned that there is no magic way to take notes, just simply what works for you will work for you and that is very true. I always wondered if I was studying correctly or taking notes right but in reality, it is simply what works for you will work for you. I think they mentioned some good tips in this podcast that I will probably try out this semester and see how it goes.

Think Piece 1: "Athleisure, Barre and Kale: the Tyranny of the Ideal Woman"

In the article “Athleisure, Barre, and Kale: the Tyranny of the Ideal Woman”, Jia Tolentino discusses her idea on the modern “ideal” woman. She also talked about social media and how that portrays the “look” of this ideal woman. She spoke on many good topics that came to mind when you think about this ideal woman. She says how this ideal woman is youthful, has nice glossy hair, and the clean expression of someone who believes she was made to be looked at. The article explains how this ideal woman is most likely seen on beaches or under the stars, both indicating beautiful things and making his ideal woman a part of it. The ideal woman is talked of very highly, she is smart and broadcasts herself in beautiful ways. She has small amounts of work done to keep up with societies say on what is beautiful for instance; she has full lips and long eyelashes. For the most part, the things talked about should be things to make women happy. Yet others see it as social pre...

Second Source

My second source for the "crazy woman" trope paper is the movie "The Girl on the Train." I think this movie shows in a different light but dramatic enough a "crazy woman." This is a story of a woman post-divorce life, everyday on her way to work she passes by her old house where her ex-husband now lives with his new wife and family. She attempts to not think about her pain and focuses on a couple a few houses down from her old one. She makes up this dream life for them in her head and one day as the train passes she sees the woman with a different man. This filled her with rage and the next day she wakes up hungover, in pain with bruises and wounds and a feeling like something bad had happened. The woman she saw was also announced as a missing person. I feel the plotline of this movie is another amazing way to show how this "crazy woman" is portrayed but this time coming from the woman herself, being afraid of herself and wondering how she got t...

Think Piece 2

Rebecca Jennings, 26 from Brooklyn, New York. Decided to try all the best things. Her main question was would these things improve her life? Coming to a small surprise her answer was yes, these things actually did improve her life. Although there's more to her story, Rebecca felt the pressure of being someone she was not during this experiment. She felt it was hard to keep up with the expectations of being perfect. At the end of her article, she mentions how she “is relieved that I can finally stop faking it.” Not comparing this article to my personal life, there are some similarities. I feel I find myself caring about what's on-trend and wanting to keep up with those things. I feel I definitely go through random splurges of spending a lot of money on unnecessary things. Those are also times where I go with only spending money on things I actually need. I think a lot of the time, we just want to feel accepted by society, or blending in with what's considered “normal” make...
