Week 9

I read the articles "TikTok and the evolution of Blackface" by Jason Parham and "Warner Media and TV Shows" by Brooks Barnes.

In the article about TikTok by Jason Parham, he speaks about an incident where a musician writes a rap for pro-black for their followers. Later though, TikTok removed this sound that he posted for some unknown reason. TikTok claimed that the sound broke community guidelines, as well as this, has happened to about 29 other black TikTokers who have experienced the same thing. I use TikTok honestly daily which is bad but I do see sounds getting removed pretty often which tends to become very annoying. This article specifically talks about racism toward black people on the app but I have seen if anyone no matter their race even speak of a racial topic get taken down on the app. I truly do not think this is the best way to handle things because they will just post again but I think rather and just taking one video down on the app they should have consequences for those who do not abide by the guidelines.

In the other article by Brooks Barnes, they talk about how Warner Bros, HBO, and Turner Broadcasting inputted a policy that is meant to increase the number of women and a higher variety of races in all shows and movies. I really was pleased to read this because it 100% is a step in the right direction and is much needed in the industry. I believe that many other companies should do the same and follow in their footsteps.

Think Piece 1: "Athleisure, Barre and Kale: the Tyranny of the Ideal Woman"

In the article “Athleisure, Barre, and Kale: the Tyranny of the Ideal Woman”, Jia Tolentino discusses her idea on the modern “ideal” woman. She also talked about social media and how that portrays the “look” of this ideal woman. She spoke on many good topics that came to mind when you think about this ideal woman. She says how this ideal woman is youthful, has nice glossy hair, and the clean expression of someone who believes she was made to be looked at. The article explains how this ideal woman is most likely seen on beaches or under the stars, both indicating beautiful things and making his ideal woman a part of it. The ideal woman is talked of very highly, she is smart and broadcasts herself in beautiful ways. She has small amounts of work done to keep up with societies say on what is beautiful for instance; she has full lips and long eyelashes. For the most part, the things talked about should be things to make women happy. Yet others see it as social pre...

Second Source

My second source for the "crazy woman" trope paper is the movie "The Girl on the Train." I think this movie shows in a different light but dramatic enough a "crazy woman." This is a story of a woman post-divorce life, everyday on her way to work she passes by her old house where her ex-husband now lives with his new wife and family. She attempts to not think about her pain and focuses on a couple a few houses down from her old one. She makes up this dream life for them in her head and one day as the train passes she sees the woman with a different man. This filled her with rage and the next day she wakes up hungover, in pain with bruises and wounds and a feeling like something bad had happened. The woman she saw was also announced as a missing person. I feel the plotline of this movie is another amazing way to show how this "crazy woman" is portrayed but this time coming from the woman herself, being afraid of herself and wondering how she got t...

Think Piece 2

Rebecca Jennings, 26 from Brooklyn, New York. Decided to try all the best things. Her main question was would these things improve her life? Coming to a small surprise her answer was yes, these things actually did improve her life. Although there's more to her story, Rebecca felt the pressure of being someone she was not during this experiment. She felt it was hard to keep up with the expectations of being perfect. At the end of her article, she mentions how she “is relieved that I can finally stop faking it.” Not comparing this article to my personal life, there are some similarities. I feel I find myself caring about what's on-trend and wanting to keep up with those things. I feel I definitely go through random splurges of spending a lot of money on unnecessary things. Those are also times where I go with only spending money on things I actually need. I think a lot of the time, we just want to feel accepted by society, or blending in with what's considered “normal” make...
