Week 11

First, from the first reading "SIFT" I got that students don't always investigate their sources to make sure the information they are using in papers or projects is legit. I remember in high school my teachers strongly stressed for us to always use legit sources in our papers or else all our work would be for nothing. Secondly, I also found in the reading "Can You Spot The Deceptive Facebook Post" that it is very very hard to tell what is real and what is fake. I noticed personally that I struggled with trying to pick them apart. Finally, one last thing I took away from this week's readings combined is that not everything is always what it seems, we need to double-check to make sure what we are using for sources or choosing to believe is credible and factual. Even the fakes look real on the internet.

Think Piece 4

More often the information you read about human trafficking is not as close to true as you would think. I think that is one reason Dan has such an issue with people being trafficked online, it tends to be very inaccurate. They mentioned the whole Wayfair dispute and how kids were being trafficked through selling furniture. I remember hearing about this through Tiktok actually, it was everywhere for a while and people were posting a bunch of conspiracy theories about it. I really thought this was 100% true when I first read into it.  I think that with social media and the fact that everyone basically believes what they see on the internet these days, the misleading and false information being surfaced and spread everywhere is way more common than you would hope. I remember when I first heard that Kobe and his daughter died in a plane crash I didn't believe it until I saw it on the news because of this common problem. I thought it was fake news like most things you see on socia...

Topic Proposal Blog Post

Considering the pop culture theme and everything we have learned so far this year, I would like to do my research project on mental health and social media. I think the main social media apps I would want to include would be Instagram and TikTok mainly because personally, I think they have the most influence on people. I want to dig into the facts that everyone wants people to think they are happier than they may really be. I want to also look into females and what makes us look so down upon ourselves and compare ourselves to others on social media. I know many girls' lives revolve around social media Instagram specifically, they base everything off of likes and comments and if they don't get enough likes or comments they look down upon themselves. I plan by doing this project with this topic to better understand the roots of these struggles and hopes to help teach myself and possibly others how to not need validation from social media to feel confident and happy within our li...

Cool Things That Came From COVID-19

After reading the article "Dave Grohl, 10-year-old Nandi Bushell and One Very Epic Drum Battle," it made me really reflect on the COVID-19 pandemic as a whole. As much as I would love to sit here and say in a way good things came out of COVID-19, but that would be a great lie. At the start of the pandemic, my mom underwent a major neck/back surgery and then was on bed rest for 3 months following. I had just gotten out of a very abusive relationship and was in the middle of a court case due to the tragic events that happened. Then I found myself in an even more toxic relationship and later my depression medicine was not working how it should have been and lead to a failed suicide attempt. I also haven't been to school in Oxford in a whole year and I blame COVID for ruining what should have been the best years of my life.

Week 8

I truly did not even know before reading these articles that movies and TV shows were analyzed based on different tests. Though, after reading over everything one thing that really stuck out to me was the Bechdel test. It is very common that the focal points of movies and shows are based around males and females and probably on a relationship involved. I also liked how the article "The Bechdel Test, The DuVernay Test, & More: What You Need To Know", discussed one of the movies that actually failed the Bechdel test was “The Avengers” one factor to the test was that two well known female characters needed to talk to one another. I think that one test that should be incorporated would be to make sure everything is equal not only for just men and women but also for those who identify as what they weren’t born as. Completely no discrimination between anyone makes everything fair. I also think that another test that should be incorporated is that same-sex couples be displaye...

Trope Paper

I chose to write about the “crazy girl” trope. I decided to use the stroke because out of all the tropes discussed on The Takes YouTube channel. I felt this one I could connect to personally through certain experiences as well as how relevant it is today. Throughout their video, they gave many different types of examples portrayed in television and movies then and now. There are many different types of crazy women portrayed in shows or movies, yet nobody ever pays attention to why they're acting the way they are. Nobody looks at where this so-called craziness even comes from. I decided to take that and go deeper with it. I chose to discuss Britney Spears, she perfectly fits into the “crazy girl” trope as well as how I want to bring more attention as to what brings women to act out in such a manner. Britney Spears is portrayed as crazy, mentally broken, and drained. The documentary recently made about her gives us a better Glimpse inside her life from the start of fame to now. In Th...

Think Piece 3

Right off the bat, Thomas dives into her focus which really grabbed my attention right away. I knew exactly what she was describing and it had me thinking about movies I have noticed this as well. I actually really love when this type of man is incorporated into movies. I feel like it really makes the movie that much more enjoyable. I also really enjoyed the points she made such as, why does it always seem like a rivalry between men and women or the woman having to prove herself to the man. I find it so crazy how she mentioned “have you ever been told you must intimidate men and that's why they don’t date you.” What made me find this so crazy was the fact that my mom always tells me that I am so pretty that guys are just intimidated by me and that’s why they never come up and talk to me. I always complain to her about how guys will approach all of my friends but never acknowledge me and it upsets me so she tells me that. I always wondered if she was right but who knows. I really ...
